Jesus Christ, Into the Wild is the most depressing thing I've read in my entire life. It tells the story of Chris McCandless, a man in his early to mid-twenties who embarks on a journey into the Alaskan territory never to return again.
Along the way Chris affects the lives of several people, including a guy who works at a grain elevator in South Dakota, a traveling woman and her boyfriend and some old dude who lost his wife and only son in a car crash.
If you haven't read this book, go out and buy a copy; it's really sobering.
